CHARLOTTETOWN: On Saturday October 27th, 2012 Islanders are invited to join PEI Community and Labour Groups to send a strong message to MP Shea Gail opposing the EI changes being implemented by the Harper Government. Islanders will gather to rally in front of Shea’s Constituency office in Summerside.
“The Federal Government must repeal the EI reform. Not only will these EI changes hurt the local economy, but the quality of public services available to Islanders will also be affected,” said Lori MacKay, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees in PEI (CUPE PEI).
“I am hard pressed to think of a public service or industry on PEI which does not rely on part-time and seasonal workers, and in turn those part-time seasonal workers rely, at least in part, on EI to make ends meet every year.”
We are inviting Islanders to take part in this Provincial Rally, Lori MacKay said: “If you yourself do not access EI benefits there is very likely someone in your family who does; or you’re an employer who relies on part-time seasonal workers.”
“The current changes will create great hardship for people who are already struggling to make ends meet,” said Bill Kays, a member or the Coalition for Poverty Eradication Strategy and a small business owner.
“They will also have a negative effect on small business owners. I have to lay off my most experienced worker for 8 weeks each year and I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to have more time off or to have to hire and train a new person. An experienced, trusted worker is a great asset,” added Kays.
Roger Byers, a Charlottetown municipal worker and member of CUPE Local 501 said: “I am voicing a concern and that is, I am working at the same capacity and receiving 50% less. The situation is bleak for lots, me included.”
Buses will be available for Islanders to get to the Rally in many communities of the province. They will be stopping in Souris, Morrell, Mt Stewart, Montague, Pools Corner, Stratford, Cornwall, Charlottetown, Hunter River, Kensington, Tignish, O’Leary, and Wellington. To reserve a seat please contact, Lori MacKay at firstname.lastname@example.org or 902-626-1112.
The Rally is on Saturday, October 27th at 1:00 P.M., in Summerside outside Gail Shea’s office.
